GratiTuesday – Gratitude of Past for Today & Tomorrow

Our focus on this GratiTuesday pulls from the past, and then zooms in on the relationship between today’s gratitude and our tomorrow-experience. I was reminded of a past essay about a quote attributed to Jim Kwik, that correlates strongly with this theme: “What if you woke up tomorrow with only what you were grateful for today?”

Back in April of 2019, I wrote, “Bong! Now there’s a wake up call (to ponder.) This notion really struck me; not because of any fear that failing to express gratitude would result in losing ‘things’, but rather because of the abundance of goodness – people, situations, places, and yes, things – acknowledged within my life experience. Wow!”

I did not elaborate any further in that essay. Apparently, I was stunned and simply got stuck on the wow of this ‘what if’ idea. For the record I love ‘what if’ questions; particularly adore the ‘what ifs’ that prompt us to explore wildly positive possibilities.

From the perspective that gratitude practices are initiated from past events or circumstances, which can then prompt a present moment appreciation, this particular ‘what if’ query serves to remind us that the gratitude protocol, if you will, is basically cyclical. In other words, past experience leads to present expression, which often circles around to new experiences with similar qualities. “You spin me right ‘round, Like a record, baby, right ‘round, ’round, ‘round.”  [Please note, I recognize this description is very broad and general. The variability and intricate details of individual experience are unique to each one of us. You’re welcome to dive all the way down this metaphysical rabbit hole, if you want… ]

What if you woke up tomorrow with only what you were grateful for today?”

Should you decide to play this particular ‘what if’ gratitude game, you may elect to keep track of your ‘cycles’, as it were. If you already keep a gratitude journal, the only additional step would be to review previous entries to determine whether current experience correlates to past expression. As for the degree of wild positivity you encounter, that is entirely subjective. It’s your game. How do you want to play it?

As always, each Tuesday we invite one another to express one thing – in the comments field – for which you are grateful, and/or share that sentiment as a post on your favorite social media site. It needn’t be lofty and can certainly reflect something we usually take for granted. I’ll go first… I AM so happy and grateful for this brand new day of limitless possibilities. Now your turn. I AM so happy and grateful now that/for: ________________________________________________
